Thomas Douvan

Tom Douvan is a seasoned trial attorney with 25 years of experience.  He brings to the firm substantial experience litigating medical-legal issues and other cases relevant to the firm's client base.

After graduating from the University of Michigan (A.B. 1980, Phi Beta Kappa; J.D. 1985), Tom spent his first year in practice trying cases at the Oakland County, Michigan Prosecuting Attorney's Office.  Tom then joined the small but sophisticated Michigan firm founded by former State Senate majority leader Daniel Cooper.  During his 5-year tenure with Cooper, Fink & Zausmer, Tom represented doctors, pharmacists and hospitals -- including the University of Michigan Hospitals -- in administrative licensing hearings.  Tom also represented the City of Detroit in complex civil litigation involving grant audit and accounting disputes.

Upon relocating to California in 1992, Tom spent many years in the environmental, toxic torts and products liability practice group chaired by John T. Ronan, III who was the former general counsel of Stauffer Chemical Company.  Their practice group was formed at national law firm Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold, and then they relocated their practice to another national law firm where they continued to partner together for nearly 10 years.  Most recently, Tom was a trial attorney with Thelen LLP, a 650-attorney firm based in San Francisco and Los Angeles that traced its roots to the 1930s.

Tom has amassed trials in many substantive areas of the law, including environmental and toxic tort, products liability, municipal and land use, patent and trade secrets, audit and accounting, commercial, business and contracts, and health care law.  His clients have included doctors, pharmacists, and other individuals, hospitals, public entities including cities, counties and school districts, and a broad range of national and international companies, including Fortune 100 corporations, in the chemical, pharmaceutical, consumer products, banking and financial services, food service, construction, computer and electronics, software, and technology industries.   Tom has tried over 30 cases to verdict, and has prosecuted and defended appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth, Ninth, Federal, and District of Columbia Circuits, as well as various state appellate courts.  Tom is admitted to practice before all courts in California and Michigan, and the United States Supreme Court.  He was also admitted in Illinois in 1987 (retired 2009).
